I checked the Internet this evening and found references to 21 soldiers (besides the three Connecticut Line soldiers already known) who were awarded the Badge of Merit! These soldiers are:

7. Peter Shumway, 4th Massachusetts Regiment. Discharged June 9, 1783. honored with the badge of merit, for six years’ faithful service," The discharge “was signed by Washington himself, the signature, "Go Washington," being clear, bold and distinct. 16. William Heath Sr. Discharged June 6, 1783 “The above William Heath has been honored with a Badge of Merit for four years faithful service. His apointment as Ensigh of a company in the first Regiment of the Second Brigade and in the Eighth Division of Militia in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 18. Private Dennis Canfield, discharged 1783, 1st New York Regiment. The discharge also mentions that Canfield was awarded the Badge of Merit for his faithful service. 19. Joshua Staples, served 6 years 2 months in the Revolution as a private and a corporal; his discharge was signed by General Washington and he received the Badge of Merit. http://www.aviatrix.com/genealogy/stories/joshua_staples.htm

Jeffrey Brace, He also fought with the Continental Army for five years, and for nine months in the American Revolution, winning the Badge of Merit, which was rarely presented to blacks at the time. 21. Oliver Cromwell, 2nd New Jersey Regiment. After seven years serving as a battlefield drummer, Oliver Cromwell was discharged in June of 1783. George Washington signed his discharge papers.   • In William C. Nell's "Colored Patriots of the American Revolution" is a discharge copy of following: Brister Baker of the 2nd Connecticut Regiment-April 1777 to June 1783 and a "Badge of Merit" for 6 years service. See [[1]] {Reference only}
