Back Street is a 1961 film made by Universal Pictures, directed by David Miller, and produced by Ross Hunter. The screenplay was written by Eleanore Griffin and William Ludwig based on novel by Fannie Hurst. The music score is by Frank Skinner. The film stars Susan Hayward and John Gavin.
Tale follows the long, unrequited romance between two people over the years as they can't seem to ever get together the way they want to.

This powerful romantic drama from Fannie Hurst brings together Susan Hayward, John Gavin and Vera Miles in a poignant story of love and sacrifice. Susan Hayward stars as Rae Smith, a successful dress designer. She is the "other woman" in Paul Saxon's life, played by John Gavin. Saxon, heir to a gigantic chain of department stores has everything, he is wealthy, handsome, talented - and married! His wife, Liz, played by Vera Miles, is the obstacle to his happiness. A confirmed alcoholic, Liz refuses to divorce him with only their two children holding their shaky marriage together. Rae and Paul meet in secret -- but still love blossoms.
