The story of a young girl, Rusty, back from America and the trials she goes through to fit back into English life because she gets teased a lot because of her accent and the words she uses. Then the one person she fits in with, her mother's housekeeper dies. Then her father comes home and big changes happen.

The story begins on the boat that Rusty is coming back on from America. The other children are all talking and then they see land and everyone goes on deck.
