Băile Govora (or just Govora) is a Romanian spa town in Vâlcea County, about 20 km south-west of Râmnicu Vâlcea and west of the Olt river. Notable features of the town (beside its mineral springs) include the Govora abbey (built in the 15th century and consolidated by Matei Basarab and later by Constantin Brâncoveanu) and the nearby "Dintr-un lemn" Monastery (16th or 17th century; the legend of its origin was recorded by Paul of Aleppo).
Govora abbey was the site where Matei Basarab introduced the first printing press in Wallachia - where the first written code of laws in Romanian was published, Pravila de la Govora, in 1640).
The resort is recommended for the treatment of respiratory diseases (bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, lung emphysema, microbial or viral pneumopathies, rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, etc.), degenerative (spondylosis, arthrosis, polyarthrosis) and abarticular rheumatic diseases (tendinitis, tendomyositis, scapulohumeral periarthritis), as well as for the treatment of peripheral and central neurological disorders (light paresis, sequels after poliomyelitis, etc.), of certain Post-traumatic stress disorders and certain associated diseases (gynecological, endocrinological, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, etc.).
The modern balneological establishments are endowed with facilities for baths of warm iodinated and sulphurous mineral water, applications of worm mud, pneumotherapy, electrotherapy, kinetotherapy and treatments with apiarian products, etc. Children's sanatorium for rheumatic and respiratory diseases.
