Bømlafjordtunnel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bømlafjordtunnel is a tunnel that connects the island Føyno in Stord municipality with the mainland at Valevåg village[1] in Sveio municipality (both municipalities in the county of Hordaland, Norway). It is part of European route E39.

The tunnel is 7820 meters long, and is Norway's longest undersea highway tunnel, dropping to a deepest point of 262.5 meters below sea level. It was opened on December 28, 2000.

It is part of the Trekantsambandet, (the Triangle Link), which is an extensive tunnel and bridge system in Norway, connecting the islands Stord and Bømlo municipalities to the mainland. It was officially opened on April 30, 2001 by Harald V, king of Norway.

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ Village is a loose translation of the Norwegian term tettsted, which refers to a collection of houses, typically in an urban setting, though suburban villages also exist in Norway. Such centers are not entirely the same as the English term village, since they are often less self-contained than villages are; and do not usually include housing related to farms.
