[edit] Background

Aznil was born and bred in Kampung Datuk Keramat, Kuala Lumpur. He graduated from University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Economics degree. Started his career in 1990 as a broadcaster and a media reporter with TV3.

He first started doing news in the broadcasting industry, then moved to hosting in 1992. Pop Kuiz was the first programme he hosts. In 1994, he hosted Melodi and Teleskop.

He then made the move to Astro Ria television channel, which also marked his entry as creative director for the channel. One of his more popular projects is his involvement with the reality programme, Akademi Fantasia.

Aznil recalled that when he began hosting the new reality show Akademi Fantasia (AF) in 2002 – the first reality talent show in the country – people came up to him and told him that it would be almost impossible to host such a programme successfully. It turned out to be a success and Aznil reaped the fruits of brought him. And he didn’t just rest on his laurels.

In 2005, while still riding high from hosting two seasons of AF, Aznil then came up with a talk show called Macam-Macam Aznil which showcases macam-macam (all and sundry). The show, which was named Best Talk Show at the Asian Television Awards 2005 in Singapore, is now at the end of its third season and has since moved to Astro Prima.

“When I first did Macam-Macam Aznil, the public had this perception that talk shows were boring and I have been grateful to be able to change that concept and come up with an entertaining show for everyone,” said Aznil, adding that recording for the fourth season of Macam-Macam Aznil would start soon.

[edit] Family

Aznil has two children, Fildza Haifa whom he calls Fifi, 18, and Fariq Haizen whom he nicknames Ricky, 14.

[edit] Future Plans

Recently in May 2007, Aznil shocked fans of Akademi Fantasia when he said he won't be back to host the highly-popular programme after helming it for five consecutive seasons.

Rumours are rife as to what Aznil will do when his exclusive contract as a creative consultant with Astro (satellite TV) expires in September.

“I’m still keeping my options open. There have been times when nobody wanted me. But I will cross that bridge when the time comes (when his contract expires). I have to consider many factors before making make any decisions about my future,” said the amiable host in an interview recently.

“Fortunately, for me there are many new things for me to explore ... even at 45.”

Aznil’s latest venture is his children’s variety show, Tom Tom Bak – arguably the first of its kind in the country – on Astro Ceria every Sunday at 12.30pm.

“I have always wanted to work on a children’s show and hosting Tom Tom Bak forms part of my efforts to bring young talents to the TV screen. The energy and talent on set are really amazing,” he added. The 30-minute show features four segments – Siapa Dia? (Who's This?), Jom Borak! (Let's Chit-chat), Ada Bakat Ke? (Got Talent?) and Jeng Jeng Jeng! (Ta-da!)

Aznil also said that he has been toying with the idea of organising a series of workshops and working closely with the Education Ministry and Yayasan Budi Penyayang aimed at encouraging children to speak up.
