Azerbaijani Americans are Americans of ethnic Azerbaijani origin, from both Azerbaijan and Iran. The majority of the group are immigrants whom arrived either as political refugees from the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran or after the fall of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s when Azerbaijan restored its' independence. An estimate of 100,000 Azerbaijanis live in the US, the largest concentrations are in Southern California (Los Angeles and San Diego), as well in the New York/New Jersey metro area and Washington, DC[citation needed].
