[edit] History

AMC is relatively new, first opening its doors to students in 1978 and named after former President Ayub Khan. In 1979 the first academic year began, with the enrollment of 100 students. However from the start it was quite apparent that the building was not adequate enough to cope with the huge number of students and faculty. AMC was moved from Abbottabad to the northern boundary of the city in 1988 along the Karakoram Highway. Today it hosts one the best campuses in Pakistan and is situated at an altitude of 1,225 meters. (4002 feet), and is said to be the highest medical school in Pakistan.

[edit] Campus

At present the AMC campus consists of a medical school building, a teaching hospital and a nursing school. The campus hosts supporting amenities for all students and staff. The medical school building has spacious lecture halls with sophisticated audiovisual teaching aids, well-equipped laboratories, museums and centrally air-conditioned library. A Self-Learning Resource Center and a computer library with access to high-speed internet is also available.

[edit] Recognition

AMC is fully recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), General Medical Council of the United Kingdom, the World Health Organization (WHO) and many reputed medical councils of the world. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan has recognized many of its departments for post-graduate training as well. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Britain has granted recognition to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AMC for the clinical training of the MRCOG candidates.
