Aymanam

Aymanam is a village in Kottayam District, Kerala, India made famous by Arundhati Roy's novel "The God of Small Things".

Ay in Tamil language means Five and Vanam in Sanskrit means Forests. Ayvanam is Aymanam, the land of five forest. These are Vattakkadu, Thuruthikkadu, Vallyakadu, Moolakkadu and Mekkadu. Kadu in Malayalam language means forest.
This 30.03 sq km of village, borders Vembanad Lake on west near Kumarakom. Two thirds of Aymanam is ricefields two meters below msl. Eight meters above msl is average elevation. River Meenachil fertilises the village. Floods in low lying areas around June July August is common but with no casualties.
There are 35,562 people, 17,687 are men, 17,875 are women and they live in 7,220 houses.
Historically, founders of Chembakassery kingdom are from Kudamaloor and the present king is employed in a private temple in Aymanam.
Aymanam is famed by great personalities: W J John Kollenkeril discovered the site of Idukki dam and possibiities of a power project; Mary Roy the human right activist and educationist; Professor S. Gupthan Nair, Arundhati Roy, Aymanam John, Aymanam Krishna Kaimal, Nalankal Krishan Pillai are all accomplished writers who are from Aymanam; Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair and Mathoor Govindan Kutty the Kathakali actors; N N Pillai the playwriter director, Vijayaraghavan the Malayalam movie actor are few of them. The famous ayurvedic physicians, Olassa Chirattamon Moose family also belong to Aymanam village.M.M.JOSEPH MOLOPARAMBIL WHO WAS THE HEAD OF THE MALAYALAM DEPT(sb college)LIVED HERE. he was elected to be the MLA and MP during his life time.his brother M.M.John moloparambil is one of the first MSW holders in kerala.
Pandavam temple has murals which shows a deviation from conventional style of wall painting of kerala.

Sree Narasimha Swamy temple is located in the heart of Aymanam. St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Kallumkathara is situated nearby.
