The openning sentence of this article may be confusing to some readers. As an introductory decription the one found at [1] is an example of a more easily understood definition. [Unsigned comment by Axiomsofchoice]

That simpler definition is not correct as a generalized statement. It assumes that utility may be measured by satisfaction. Many marginalists assumed just that, but the article is careful to distinguish this conception as a special case.
