Detroit based AWOL was formed in the late 1980's. Founding members Kevin Jones and Marqui Vaughn met while attending Joliet Junior College in Chicago, Illinois. Although they never achieved mainstream success, they enjoyed a cult following. Their first single ""You Don't Want None Of This"" is considered a Detroit underground classic by those who have follow Detroit hip hop. They are also known for their stylish attire such as 3 piece Armani suits, Coogi sweaters and alligator shoes.

Bennie Ellis Herron AKA D.J. Homicide was murdered in 1996. Details surrounding Herron’s death are sketchy, but Detroit Police claim that Herron was killed during a home invasion in an apartment on 8 Mile and Lahser, but the circumstances have been disputed by both the surviving members of AWOL and Herron's family.
