Awbere

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Awbere is a town in eastern Ethiopia. It is located in the Jijiga Zone of the Somali Region, seven kilometers from Fugnan Bira in the neighboring Oromia Region.[1]

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Awbere has an estimated total population of 35,977, of whom 18,978 were males and 16,999 were females.[2] It is one of two towns in Awbere woreda.

The Italian Giuda described Awbere in 1938 as Somali village with about 1000 inhabitants, whose houses were partly built of masonry, and possessing a mosque; a little to the west of the village was the tomb of Shek Barek.[3]
