An award is something given to a person or group of people to recognize excellence in a certain field. Awards may consist of prizes (money or other prizes), and/or plaques, certificates, ribbons, trophies, medals, and other memorabilia of the award. (See Category:Award items.) Awards often accompany award lectures, speeches, or other events, and may sometimes be designated by the name of the event.
In addition to general awards, specific types of awards include:
- civil decorations, national prizes, and orders, decorations, and medals -- the most formal awards
- scholarships and Fellowships
- honorary titles (including honorary degrees)
- Halls of fame
- Ironic and humorous awards, which are often a critique or negative recognition
Some awards are more properly considered competitions but are in the form of awards:
- challenge awards
- records
- sports trophies and awards are frequently in the form of competitions
