His Chinese name is 胡文虎. His brother, Aw Boon Par is 胡文豹. They were not Cantonese. They were Burmese Chinese-Hakka whose ancestors came from Fujian. The Cantonnese spelling of Aw Boon Haw is Wu Man Fu and Aw Boon Par is Woo Man Par. Aw Boon Haw also founded the Sing_Tao_Daily , Hong Kong's second largest Chinese language newpaper. Aw Boon Haw has a sister by the name of Wu Sin (Cantonese)
His father migrated to Burma and married to Burmese Chinese lady and he was born in Burma. So he should be called Burmese Chinese. Later only he migrated to Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
