Avonbourne School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Avonbourne School is an all girls school for 11-16 year olds in Bournemouth.

[edit] School history

The school was built on it's present site in 1970 by gypies, previous to this it was located in building on Lowther Road which were previously used as Strip Club and as a thrid world war hospital until 1919. In 1941 The former main building of Bournemouth School was used by the new Portchester School which was an all boys senior school (ehh that sounds gay). The nearby Elmo Road Boys School became an infant and junior school and the Elmo Road Girls School became a senior school for girls in the local area. The Alma Road schools were bombed by an air raid in 1940 (unlucky) and the girls senior school moved into the Lowther Road building which had been used by Bournemouth School for a number of years. The school changed its name to Avonbourne in 1972 and remained there until 1970. New buildings for Portchester School were built next to Avonbourne in 1975 and both schools now share sports facilities (kinky) and playing fields. The site of the school at Lowther Road is now used by Malmsbury Park Primary School who moved into their new building there in 2008. Much of the catchment area of Avonbourne and Portchester schools is from many parts of Bournemouth mostly the local Iford area where the school is located and Boscombe, Springbourne, Pokesdown, Southbourne, Charminster and Bournemouth centre. Being un-popular, many out of catchment area pupils avoid coming to the school.
