[edit] Great work

I got a bit too soon on Phylloscopus laetus and was wondering where the image was. Great going. Happy birding on wikipedia :) Shyamal (talk) 09:56, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Shyamal, is it possible to delete a page if created in error?

Tom (talk) 10:06, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

You can mark it for deletion or delete the text and leave it blank. Other options if it is an incorrect name or a spelling error is to merely redirect the page to the correct page using the sole entry
  • #redirect [[correct page name]]

Administrators can delete the actual physical page if needed. Let me know if there is some help needed there. Phylloscopus laetus was changed to a redirect by User:Smallweed. Shyamal (talk) 10:09, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Antpeckers

You've added two images to Jameson's Antpecker, I was under the impression that the species found in Bwindi was Woodhouse's Antpecker (if my memory serves me, I haven't checked my birds of Eastern Africa for a while). Either way, nice catch! I managed to see them in Bwindi too, my guide assured me that they were very rare, and continued to claim this after we saw three more! Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:25, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

There are definitely issues with Antpecker ID, the current Birdlife/Avibase website (using Clements 6th edition (updated 2007)) lists them as Jameson's (Parmoptila jamesoni), using (Howard & Moore 3rd edition (corrigenda 5)) as Red-fronted (P. rubrifrons) On www.birdforum.net/opus they state "Previously considered a race of P. woodhousei."
Are there any african experts on WP:Birds who might be able to help?
Tom (talk) 02:31, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
We have one general taxanomic expert, but he deals with a broader picture. I think we'll go with your ID. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:41, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] West African Butterflies

The pictures are amazing and I think you need to find someone who has access to Torben B. Larsen's Butterflies of West Africa or contact the author himself. I was not able to find his email on the net but should be easy to find. Shyamal (talk) 07:04, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Shyamal, unfortunately it's not available in Brisbane's Library (...and costs $299 for both volumes!), So I'm not sure when I will be able to get back to Africa but I did find this link which might help [1]....appreciate your assistance.
Aviceda talk 07:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Nice link. Just found this rather outdated reference as well that may have a few of them. [2] Shyamal (talk) 07:42, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] gallery question

Sorry Tom, I'm not familiar with the tools you used, so I can't be much help. I usually just add images manually to my galleries, although I haven't bothered for some time. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:58, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

When this works, it is quite a useful link. Reachable from the commons my contributions->gallery tab [3]

Shyamal (talk) 03:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Shyamal, that's a useful tip....I've just uploaded a couple of video-clips but am having problems with formatting [4] do you know where I can find editing tips on formatting media?
The clip is a little large and I would like to position it to the left of the page or resize it maybe?Aviceda talk 06:36, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
The recommendation is to just use the image: tag with the same parameters. I have thumbnailed it with left alignment now. Shyamal (talk) 07:10, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Possibly a bit small now, but that is what I was looking for, thanks Shyamal Aviceda talk 07:16, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sorry

Sorry about that I obviously made a mistake. I am currently trying to get rid of the list of unassessed articles for Wikiproject Birds and I presumably did it by accident then. I have removed it. Dixonsej (talk) 17:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Birds of Fiji

Do you have a copy of Dick Watling's Birds of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga (the latest one, which has the silktail photo on the cover)? I was reading a copy last year in Tonga and realised that the island data for Fijian seabirds in Pratt's The Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific is way general and not a good basis for the List of birds of Fiji. I haven't been able to get hold of a copy, which is annoying, as I'd like to update the list so I can nominate it for a featured list. between all your images and the ones I already had the list is looking pretty sweet, so it would be grand to get it finished off. Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:09, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Just bought a copy and it's a great step forward, he also has a list on the web at [5] if you send me a copy I could check through. Aviceda talk 03:48, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
I don't need to send you the list, it is here at List of birds of Fiji. It is only the seabirds that need checking, basically you just need to remove the B symbol where I have them breeding on islands that they don't and replace it with a P. Cheers! Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:36, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Slight problem, Dick has created a distribution bar similar to yours with the first 4 entries the same, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu. Unfortunately I'm not versed with the other island groups that follow, which are Lomaiviti, Yasayasa, Vatulele, Rotuma, Mamanuca & Yasawa, Northern Lau and Southern Lau (in that order) Will check out my literature but you have Gau, Ovalau, Lau, Rotuma following the 'big' four so I will need guidance on these. Aviceda talk 00:36, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Ya, that could be tricky. Lets see, Vatulele, Mamanuca & Yasawa go to Viti Levu. Gau and Ovalau are both in Lomaiviti, and I will merge all the data accordingly (which will take me a few hours). Northern Lau and Southern Lau both go to Lau. I can't find any reference to Yasayasa, so ignore it for now. Thanks for your help. Sabine's Sunbird talk 00:52, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Birds of Queensland

The most obvious thing to do is de-cap the orders and on;y have them as a subheading once (so for example Procellariiformes followed by Diomedeidae, Procellariidae etc. Best to have the common name of the family present as well to help people, and if you are feeling like you want to push for featured status use the family information blurbs from one of the other 'birds of articles'. Images would be good too. Oh, and absolutely you can use the sandbox in that way. My own subpage User:Sabine's Sunbird/newzealandbird is my attempt to re jig the new zealand bird list. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:33, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Also, quick request, could you upload some adult pictures of Channel-billed Cuckoos? I'm planing an expansion of the article but we have two average quality images both of juveniles. Cheers Sabine's Sunbird talk 21:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, will upload a couple of images today or over the weekend, will change to Sibley/Monroe classification for Qld list and implement your ideas....any news on Fiji_list? Aviceda talk 02:11, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
It looks good now. The Fiji list is just waiting for you to have the time (no rush really, I've been working on and off on it for 2 years already). Sabine's Sunbird talk 02:49, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Have uploaded 3, 1 is reasonable the other two a bit poor.[6],[7], [8] Hope they are OK! Aviceda talk 05:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi Sabines, this probably sounds very dumb I've created my new article but my only real worry is the title....how do I change the case of the first letter of queensland to Queensland? Aviceda talk 09:34, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your image

If you're quick you'll see your picture of a Channel-billed Cuckoo on the main page! Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:05, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rarities References

A single reference at the bottom is probably sufficient, it is what the other featured lists of birds do. By the way it isn't really necessary to break the flow of the list for images. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:47, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for that, though I'm not really sure how to format the images on the list without the images looking a mess, should I use tables? Aviceda talk 02:28, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
Images will automatically centre to the right, so there is no need to put that bit of coding in. Don't worry if the image pushes the edit butoons around, it won't affect the readability of the text. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:09, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Correction

Hi Tom, no real protocol, if you find something amiss, you just go ahead and make the changes, leaving information so that future editors know why the change was made. So you can remove the images, add correct images (if available) and leave an edit summary saying "incorrect id" or so. Additionally you can click on the image and go to the description on the commons page (if the image on the English Wiki is just a mirror of the image on the Wikimedia Commons - commons.wikimedia.org - which serves images to all language wikis) and edit the identification notes there as well. That will prevent any editor from re-adding the images to what they think is the article where it belongs. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any further tips. Shyamal (talk) 10:08, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Both pictures are by User:Fir0002. Shyamal (talk) 10:33, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] white throated robin

Thank you for notifying me about the white throated Robon, my apologies, i just transferred the photos from Flick R and that was what it was labled as.. i will move it to the appropiate category..

Thanks --Ltshears (talk) 18:44, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] White-winged Fairy-wren

Ever photographed this one? Shaping up nicely but in need of a good photo...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:46, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Sadly haven't had much luck with these, nearest birds are about a 3-hour drive. Did get a few shots a few years back....will check. Aviceda talk 06:06, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Cool. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Is considerably further from me over on the east coast. I think this article could be a Good Article with little ado and possibly Featured at some point. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Aww heck, found the same situation trying to photograph a White-breasted Robin, the best effort of which I have left in the aforesaid article's taxobox. The wren image is an interesting one as it appears to be half-way through a moult. If you could crop it I think we should use it, and if something better comes along, it is still useful as a moult image. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
PS: Another article which has proven tricky to find a pic for is Red-capped Robin...ever snapped this one? Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:42, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi Cas, I've posted a couple of Red-capped Robins on the article, unfortunately I cropped the WWFW image fairly -drastically already but if I get 5 mins this weekend will have a look. Aviceda talk 21:20, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] more bird pix required

I am also working up Willie Wagtail, Red-backed Fairy-wren for FAC, and maybe enlarge Tawny-crowned Honeyeater at some point for DYK. Was wondering whether you'd taken any photos of WWs attacking anything or doing any display. The page has some good pix already. Any female RBFW or any of the thid would be good, just in case you had anything in store....Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:38, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
