Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg

Dr. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg (born March 1944) is a contemporary Torah scholar and author. A native of Glasgow, Scotland,[1] Zornberg is a descendant of well known rabbis from Eastern Europe who settled in Austria. Zornberg's family fled Austria during the collapse of Jewish life and subsequent genocide of the holocaust. Zornberg holds a PhD from Cambridge University in English Literature.[2]

Beginning her teaching career roughly around 1980,[1] Zornberg has grown to world acclaim through her writing and teaching of biblical commentary on the books of the Torah. She has lectured and taught internationally[2] and has appeared on PBS[3] (the American television Public Broadcasting Service) in a film on the Book of Genesis. She has currently published two books regarding her thoughts, theories, and commentaries on the books of Genesis (The Beginning of Desire)[3] and Exodus (The Particulars of Rapture: Reflections on Exodus).[4]

Avivah will be speaking on 'Law and Narrative in the Book of Ruth' at the 'Way's of Reading' Conference on 11th July 2007 held at the British Library Conference Centre.
