From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello "Average Earthman" and welcome to Wikipedia. A few tips for you:

Hello, stuff like Network Service Provider is a speedy deletion candidate and should be tagged with . No use tagging it with and going through the VfD process for rubbish like that. And, BTW, if you tag something with , you should also list it on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. But for this one, if you haven't already added it there, I just suggest changing the tag to . Lupo 13:28, 17 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Cricket pages

From Vfd discussion, it sounds you might know about cricket. Could you help with this one? There is a page about cricketeer on Cleanup with the following text:

Wenura Dissanayake - just a list of stats, last sentence bizarre. No google hits, does he exist?

I was profoundly puzzled by the sentence "his bowling career ended due to safety issues of spectators" but I know nothing about cricket. Does that sound plausible? Andris 22:13, May 19, 2004 (UTC)

I was just running up the tally on the deletion page for Empire of Atlantium and have noted your vote as a vote for delete, even though you don't say "delete" anywhere in you vote. [edit] European Union Olympic medals count for 2004

Hi there,

I wonder would you consider reversing your decision to delete this article. I have substantially rewritten it. A united EU team is not going to happen. I've discussed potential EU co-operation towards the olympics, and kept the table. I believe the table is valid, for us Europeans/EUians to see how the area has fared as a whole. Please comment on my talk page if you still feel the article should be deleted.

[edit] Professor Sir

Debrett's Correct Form states: "It is not customary in formal usage to combine the style emanating from other sources with titles conferred by the Sovereign. Alderman Sir William Brown and Professor Sir Edward Hailstorm are solecisms." The media don't tend to be good guides to correct form, at any rate (the BBC are especially bad). [edit] What is notability?

I did nominate the kings of Numenor pages for deletion and it seems that they're too popular. Apparently my factual pages on election results are far less notable than lists of names out of a Tolkein appendix. Acsenray 16:18, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Michael M. Krop High School

  • Since you posted your DELETE vote in Dr. Michael M. Krop High School, I have improved the article substantially. Still working on it, but for now I would like you to check it out and hopefully change your vote to KEEP. Your help will be greatly appreciated.--AAAAA 01:13, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • I've had a look at the page, and can see you've done a lot of thorough work on it, but I'm sorry to say it still doesn't make it notable for me. I'm not looking for quantity or depth of detail, more the shining light that says why this is a particularly notable school. I'll congratulate you on the thoroughness, but my opinion of the level of note needed for a school clearly differs on the fundamental level from yours. Average Earthman 12:20, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
      • You are right. There's nothing really notable about this school, yet. It's too young (only 6 years). But I think it would not hurt anybody if this and all high schools that had somebody write a thorough article on them could "stay". As mentioned in different parts of the discussion, this article is of interest to about 3,000 people every year (1,000 students and their parents). Over 20 years, it will be of interest to more than 50,000. Maybe a few of those will contribute continously to the article. I estimate that eventually Wikipedia will let High Schools "in", as it is customary for Colleges and universities. Why not start now?--AAAAA 12:30, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
        • Unless the article is trivial, rude or non-factual, or occupies a space better suited to a different topic, there's no reason to delete it. I could imagine prospective parents looking their local schools up on the internet would find the encyclopaedic article most useful. Nicholas 18:22, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Ramil Safarov

Nagorno-Karabakh is a region that is the object of a disputed between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They had a real war, not just an edit war. For a taste of just how hot people get over this issue, read about Ramil Safarov. The copy of the page at Republic of Nagorno-Karabahk is one of many created the other day by an anon, User:64.136.2.254, who also messed with a lot of redirects and every link to the Nagorno-Karabakh page. Theresa knott cleaned up a lot of the mess. This page is still around because a likely sockpuppet, User:Clarkefreak, reverted out the del tag and made this page ineligible for speedying. I'm working with the parties to end the dispute. If I thought that a redirect was appropriate, I could have saved myself a lot of typing. — Davenbelle 13:39, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images and media for deletion

  • I am contacting people who previously helped to vote to delete a generally objectionable photograph by a vote of 88 to 21, and who might be unaware that immediately after that image was voted to be deleted someone posted another which was very similar in content. My objections to this, and the previous image that was voted to be deleted might be based upon reasons far different from any that you have, but I do object to it, and consider the posting of such images to be acts of asinine stupidity, which burdens the project and its major educational aims in ways that they should not be burdened, and can be extremely detrimental to the acceptance and growth of WIkipedia's use and influence. Thus far those who I believe to be in the extreme minority of Wikipedians who would like to include these images, many who have been channeled to the voting page from the article with which it is associated have dominated the voting, 23 to 12 (as of the time that I composed this message). I would like to be somewhat instrumental in shedding a bit more light upon the issue, and if possible, helping to turn the tide against its inclusion. It might also be necessary to begin making an effort to establish an explicit Wikipedia policy against explicit photographic depictions of humans engaged in erotic, auto-erotic, or quasi-erotic activities. To my limited knowledge such images have not been accepted as appropriate anywhere else within this project, and frankly I can agree with those who are casually labeled prudes for opposing their inclusion, that they should not be. Vitally important information that might be unwelcome by some is one thing that should never be deleted, but un-needed images that can eventually prevent or impede many thousands or millions of people from gaining access to the great mass of truly important information that Wikipedia provides is quite another matter. There are vitally important distinctions to be made. Whatever your reasons, or final decisions upon the matter, I am appealing for more input on the voting that is occurring at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. ~ Achilles 04:22, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The Most Honourable and Worthy Ancient Order of the Knights of the Franklin Mint

Or something like that. Congrats on being the first person to vote on all three of these silly articles. Well, I've spent more time on this chap than I can spare, and am turning off the 'puter for the night. However, I thought I might let some sane person know that "Lord Seal" has a funny way of creeping into Spilsby. Who knows, perhaps "Lord Hudson" will similarly creep into an article on some other placename. If, as is highly unlikely, you have nothing better to do, keep your eyes peeled! (No need to reply, but if you do reply, please do so here: I'll take a quick look tomorrow.) -- Hoary 13:30, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

[edit] Furness Railway

It has been pointed out to me the error of my ways by another. It is, I am given to understand though, not just a question of individual preference, but part of the Wikipedia protocol that one does not include editorial comment within the article. [edit] issues over school articles

In November 2003, there was a VfD debate over Sunset High School (Portland). The debate was archived under Talk:Sunset High School (Portland). What to do with the article is still being contested and has been recently re-nominated for VfD at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland).

I am writing to you because you have participated in such debates before. There still does not exist a wikipedia policy (as far as i can tell) over what to do in regards to articles about specific U.S. public school. My hope is that a real consensus can come out of the debate, and a real policy can take shape. Take part if you are so willing. Kingturtle 02:20, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The Canadian Connection

My comment on Votes for deletion/Sir Anthony Beaumont-Dark was meant to be humorous. I VfDed an article on a Canadian businessman whose sole claim to fame was a disastrously unsuccessful run for Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party. I was amazed, then irritated, then finally amused when the article was saved by very vocal support from Canadian editors. Which is why I tend to cite the Alan de Jardin debate whenever the notability of an obscure individual is at issue. ---Isaac R 15:55, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Hello, pleased to meet you. About the pseudonyms, that was my conclusion, too, but I thought I'd express it politely in the edit summary anyway. I thought it would give the editor a chance to contribute positively if s/he were genuine. :-) --RobertGtalk 12:00, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Births

Wikipedia is mostly black-and-white with respect to notability. For example I fail to see why the second 1992 guy is better than the one you want to delete. He is not Rambo either.

Also, there are plenty of discussions about categories vs. lists, with many people insisting that both tools have their share of usefulness. Many people see no harm in a list of 800 or even 8000 persons. Wikipedia is not paper. See, e.g., List of Jews. I don't care if they will list a milliion of them.

This is not the first case when it is difficult to decide what is in and what is out, but please remember, there should be a kind of consensus in this type of decisions (and not only for year 1992), otherwise it is just a discrimination with respect to this poor marginally notable guy, but who IMO is not less deserving than next best pornstar.

If you have strong feelings about this issue, please address your concern, e.g., at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy). mikka (t) 19:52, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I forgot to answer your direct questions.

it your intention that the year pages should list the birth of everybody born in that year with a Wikipedia article?
No. My intention is ensure fair treatment. As long as you have guidelines in place about births/deaths, kick them boys out. Otherwise no-no.
should we list all of them?
I'd say we should not delete them without fair reason. The same problem was, e.g., with articles for high schools. People are divided 50-50 about their notability.

mikka (t) 20:01, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I noticed that you did the same in some other years. I am not going to chase you everywhere, since I don't really care about all these persons. I trust you think about my arguments seriously, though. mikka (t) 21:07, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I understand your concern, but when fan of porn stars catch up with the existence of these year/month articles, are you willing to spend your time to fend them off? Forget pornstars. What about the gray area, persons of medium noitability. Who will decide? Shall we vote each person again? You are lucky that this TV boy does not have much fans here. (I am ready to forget him, if you delete him again.)

But I am repeating, if you are really concerned with the issue (I am not), you have to start a common discussion. The year page says "Births". It does not say "Birth of real cool guys." And you will eventually waste lots of your time.

Good luck fending off nonnotables. Over and out. mikka (t) 00:34, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Government Warehouse

In Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Government Warehouse you said that the original contents of Government Warehouse, before my later rewrite, were "not an encyclopedia article". Reddi (talkcontribs) has since restored those original unverifiable contents to the article, and then, when I removed them again, "in order to avoid an edit war" forked List of the Government Warehouse's contents. That latter has since been nominated for deletion, but currently there is just the one keep vote. Reddi (talkcontribs) has stated on Talk:Government Warehouse that if the latter article is deleted, xe intends to re-add the content to Government Warehouse once again. [edit] Beepjeep

Hi Earthman!

The question you posted at Beepjeep is a good one. In general, "hoax" is not a good reason to speedy. The scrutiny an article receives when it is speedied is very small, and that can lead to some factual articles being deleted when they have been mistaken for hoaxes. Take a look at the userpage of Rossami and you will find some examples of articles mistaken as hoaxes, and saved when they have been verified.

As for "patently" untrue as I think the Beepjeep article is, where do we draw the line between patently untrue and just untrue? What would you do if you stumbled across an article like this:

Karlsson is a fat boy who has a propellor fastened to his back. Because of this propellor he can fly. He starts this propellor by pushing a button in his bellybutton. And Karlsson is the best person in the world.

Looks quite ridiculous until you see the article Karlsson-on-the-Roof.

Now with that said, I was quite tempted to speedy it, but decided to "play it safe" by bringing it to AFD instead. Yours, Sjakkalle (Check!) 12:33, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stacy Kernweis

Hey, AE, an article you voted to delete a while back has been recreated under a different name and is now at AfD. Since the article's creator (or leading proponent at least) is going all out to bolster support on talk pages, I thought I should level the playing field and do the same for deletes. I don't much care for this sort of thing really, as I believes it skews the process, but it seems he might be getting some results so I think something needs to be done to counter it. Thanks. -R. fiend 16:02, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Normal, annual, one-nation sports events removed. Lance Armstrong winning TdF left in due to international profile. - Get off your high horse mate.

I spit out my water when I read that edit summary. The 2005 AFL Grand Final was one of the biggest sporting events watched in the world by millions of viewers. If you're not familiar with the sport, I suggest you take a look at AFLVideo and learn something about the game. Watch the full Grand Final of 2005, which was a history-making event. A 72-year drought was broken, one of the longest in sporting history. If you're gonna include stuff about your stupid White Socks or Red Socks or whatever the bloody hell they're called, this ranks as one of the biggest sporting events of 2005, with over 90,000 spectators watching. Disgraceful. Rogerthat 01:29, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

I still think one of the longest droughts in history is worthy of a mention. I wouldn't include Port Adelaide's 2004 premiership win under 2004, but 2005 was clearly worth a mention. Not only did it mark the ending of a drought, it earmarked the sport's major penetration into Sydney, traditionally not a city with Australian rules support. It was one of the biggest Grand Finals worldwide too, with Tadhg Kennelly the first Irishman to win a premiership flag. I can assure you the following up there in Ireland was huge. Anyway, check out the game mate - watch one at AFL Video and tell me your thoughts on it ;-). Rogerthat Talk 10:25, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gaurav Raja on births in 1990

If you take issue with Mr. Raja's listing on recent births, perhaps you should nominate the article on him for deletion. Yes, he is not the world record holder and that is not his claim to fame. His youth (15 years old) is one of the major factors that give him notability and as such a listing for his birthdate seems very appropriate. Secondly, he has been featured very prominently in the media including a listing as the primary story on Yahoo News, an AP article that appeared in hundreds of newspapers, and a Today Show appearance. I will relist him and welcome you to continue this debate on the page's discussion page. ErnestIsTheMan 21:12, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Yes - long ago! I'd forgotten about that template being there... looks like the POV-ish coomment was fixed by an anon back in December. I've removed the template. Cheers. Grutness...wha? 12:56, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alan Mcilwraith

I just went through the history of this article (and its recreation) for a Times journalist, and dropped your (user)name. Well done on this case, you were a credit to Wikipedia! Have you seen [1]? "We suggest you try the space cadet organisation." - David Gerard 18:04, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Neil Hannon

Thanks for your message... You may be right. I always thought in English classes at school that 'the author didn't actually mean all this! it's the work of some critic!'. Whether he means it or not, the place for such an observation (unless confirmed by Hannon himself) probably isn't in an encyclopaedia :)

I think that's exactly what you said, in which case, I agree :D

p.s. Hannon, not Hanlon ;) Annihilatenow 14:56, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] University of Nottingham

Well I've checked the website already and why would UoN give false figures? If you try their website it just won't give any figures all together. I could only find research grants that total about 100 million pounds but no endowment figures. It is also hard to find these figures for the LSE, so I'm wondering if these UK public schools have little need for an endowment if their government funding is comparatively large. ArchonMeld 17:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Okay awesome. Thanks. ArchonMeld 22:38, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1990s

About the sentences I "added"... I was editing an old version of the page which an admin reverted to so I thought it's a good non-vandalized version. Next time I'll compare to the current version, thanks for reverting my mistaken edit. Psychomel@di(s)cussion 16:19, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I know this is random...

but did you really never hear of Kingdom Hearts? ever? - Malomeat 06:52, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Stolen from RPG gamer:
It came as no surprise to anybody when Kingdom Hearts II, the much-anticipated sequel to Kingdom Hearts, flew onto the shelves. Square Enix and Buena Vista Games have quantified Kingdom Hearts II's strong reception by releasing some shipment figures for the popular series.
According to an April 7 announcement by the two companies, Kingdom Hearts II had shipped 1.3 million units since its release on March 28. The figure rivals that coming out of Japan, where 1.2 million units have been shipped to retailers since the game's release five months ago, December 22. Some elementary math reveals that a total of 2.5 million copies have been shipped world-wide to date.
The first Kingdom Hearts has seen 2.6 million units shipped to retailers since it hit the market in September 2002, and combined with Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, the Game Boy Advanced iteration of the series, 8.5 million Kingdom Hearts games have been shipped since its inception. With the upcoming European release of Kingdom Hearts II, Buena Vista and Square Enix are predicting the series will soon reach 10 million copies. In comparison, Square Enix's flagship franchise, Final Fantasy, has sold 65 million units, and Dragon Quest 40 million.
As you can see, it is quite popular. I'd reccommend it too! - Malomeat 22:05, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, I'd make some effort to see who I was recommending things to before recommending them, since my opinion is that it looks absolutely dreadful. Average Earthman 15:50, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] talk:Flexity Classic

Can I have your comment on the discussion about "Vigilnce control" in the talk page of the Flexity classic.Myrtone (the strict Australian wikipedian)

[edit] New link on this page

I have added a new link on that page regarding deadmans' on trams in France, it includes a description of the deadman's control on the Freiburg Combino but I don't fully understand it. Myrtone

  • I was going to look at it, but to be honest I don't care. My interest in trams is very limited, and rapidly exhausted. Average Earthman 12:14, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I'll ask EnglishElectric instead.Myrtone

[edit] Need a pointer

In this edit, you reverted an erasure by an anonymous user who's been hanging around the Saddam Hussein page trying to push his point of view into the article. Now he's taken to erasing that bit again. He might stop if we can provide a citation. So: do you have one, or can you point me to where I might find one? --Mr. Billion 05:16, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deleting new user Pingfan's articles

I track new users for a few days after I welcome them to Wikipedia and I noticed you put speedy deletion tags (with no explanation) on Pingfan's two new articles:

  • GBO Trusted Enterprise Award
  • Global Business Opportunity Forum Singapore 2006

This forum sounds like a big event; I think it's jumping the gun to speedy-delete the second article and the first article probably needs some consideration as well. Pingfan is a new user and new users tend to go away if they see their articles disappearing for what seem like obscure reasons (even if they make sense to us); you might explain on the talk page what you're looking for.

I've already put hangon tags on both articles.

Thanks, --A. B. 04:18, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

The forum sounds like a big event, yes. But then 'Sir Alan McIlwraith' sounded like a soldier. I put the explanation in the edit history summary - they were adverts. 128.243.220.42 12:10, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alfred Henry Hook

Um. Because I was assessing articles for WP:MILHIST and got a bit lazy, basically. It's not really a stub, though when I first looked at it, it seemed a bit "on the line" and I tend to assess those down. UnDeadGoat 15:21, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alfred Senitt

Thanks for adding a page on Alan Senitt. In the future, when notable individuals die, please add their names to the "Deaths" section on the current events page. Thanks, Tchadienne 17:07, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

  • I didn't think he was sufficiently notable to warrant entry in that section (and if he was, you wouldn't have got his name wrong in the heading above). Average Earthman 20:46, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Throughbred racing project

A number of Wikipedians have come together and formed the WikiProject Throughbred racing to help to expand and better organise information in articles and categories related to the sport of thoroughbred racing. As a past contributor to horse racing articles, we invite you to consider becoming a participant in the project, and/or adding the page to your watchlist so that you become aware, and can join any future horse racing discussions, which may be of interest to you. Regards - Cuddy Wifter 02:10, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Superman Curse

The examples you gave are not really examples of the curse in popular culture. They are just articles about or mentioning the supposed curse. In order to be considered, I think we need something like a movie, a book or even an extended comedy sketch or song about it. Something to show how the curse itself has entered popular culture. If you have any suggestions, mention them in the article's discussion page. Rhindle The Red 03:54, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Please post an further discussion on the articles discussion page. Thanks. Rhindle The Red 12:51, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 28 March

Given your edit summary on 28 March ('Since some are insisting that everyone with a wikipedia article born on this date should appear here, I'm adding all of them'), it appears you believe you are making some sort of point, though exactly what it is eludes me. --CalendarWatcher 14:29, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Regarding your comment, 'The only consistent conclusion therefore is to actually make the effort to add all the people I feel are more deserving of being on the list to the list', the only consistent conclusion I can come to is that you're pitching a fit and think you're disrupting Wikipedia to make some point, but if it makes you feel better, have at it. --CalendarWatcher 15:57, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kriss Donald

I note your previous contributions to the above page. Discussions are ongoing regarding the relevance of some of the page's contents, and appear to have reached a stalemate: I would appreciate your input. Please see the talk page Best, FrFintonStack 01:39, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Not surprised they've reached a stalemate, to be honest. And given one of the regular contributors appears to be a one-article editor with a politically biased username, I'm not interested in commenting any further. Average Earthman 13:53, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mamohet Weyonomon

I see you and I created different articles on the same person within about an hour or two of each other (on the day this was widely reported in the UK). Your article has some details mine is lacking, with one small problem, the title is spelt wrong (Mamohet Weyonomon instead of Mahomet Weyonomon). Someone has suggested a merge and I was wondering if you'd like to transfer the relevant details over. I was going to do it myself, but I thought you would know the article better. Regards, Canley 20:28, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] January 1

When removing non-notable information from an article please be more specific in your edit summary, thank you.
"Bye-bye redlinks and unlinked."
You'd have a full-time job removing all the redlinks from Wikipedia if that's the only reason for deletion, lol. Roaming27 22:21, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Aluminium reference

There's a question about a reference of yours at Talk:Aluminium#Erroneous reference?. Could you clarify please? Femto 15:13, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] John Barton King

Hey Average Earthman. A couple years ago, you started the Bart King article. It has now come a long way from your stub and is now up for an FAC HERE. Just thought you might like to know how Bart King is doing! Keep up the great work.--Eva bd 16:50, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Walter Benona Sharp

I see you have a history of working on the article Walter Benona Sharp. I am looking at it from the project Wikipedia:Unreferenced articles where it is one of the longest unreferenced tagged articles that does not meet at least the barest minimum of verifiability. It has been tagged and completely without references since June 2006. It would be extremely helpful if you had some references you could add to the article to help support its verifiability and notability. Thanks for any help you can give.
