During the transportation of the King's Seal to another secret location from Soul Society, the procession is attacked by two sister arrancars and the Seal stolen.Tōshirō Hitsugaya, under orders to guard it, goes after the thieves. After fending off the fire-elemental arrancar who bounds off into the smoke and wreckage caused by the attacks, he follows after, only to be stabbed in the abdomen from below by a masked figure, who seems to recognise him from way back. They fight and soon the mysterious shinigami flees, with Hitsugaya following after without a word to anyone else.

Meanwhile, Ichigo Kurosaki is wandering through a forest, and encounters a wall of kido. Slicing through it, he finds himself in the aftermath of the disasterous procession, and the shinigami special forces attack him, though Soifon calls them off before anyone is hurt. They exchange a brief conversation before she teleports him back to the forest with the use of hand seals. There, Ichigo encounters Ishida Uryuu, who is also exploring the same forest. It starts snowing and an exhausted, injured Hitsugaya stumbles and collapses in front of them.

In Soul Society, a Gotei 13 captain's meeting is called and Hitsugaya is suspected of treachery. The shinigami of the Tenth Division all have their zanpakutō confiscated.

Hitsugaya wakes up after a dream of his academy days, when he first met Kusaka Sojiro. He finds himself in Ichigo's bed, and soon Ichigo enters the room and sits down in an attempt to ask him what happened, only to be ignored. He then inquires about Kusaka, having heard Hitsugaya utter his name as he was sleeping. Hitsugaya refuses to answer, and Ichigo leaves. After he is gone, Hitsugaya places his captain's haori on Ichigo's desk and leaves, wearing a cloak instead. Ichigo was prepared for this and confronts Hitsugaya outside the house, though Hitsugaya turns down his offer to help, and they fight. Ichigo demands to know what happened, but with a pained expression, Hitsugaya responds that he has to do it alone. Startled, Ichigo is sent hurtling into a wall, and just as he recovers, the arrancar sisters show up for Hitsugaya. A brief fight ensues, with Ichigo greatly outmatched, and Hitsugaya disappears after the arrancar as Ichigo blacks out.

He awakens to Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai crouching by him, and is further awakened by Renji punching him in the face. The two tell him of find out what happen
