Avery is a census-designated place (CDP) in Calaveras County, California, United States. The population was 672 at the 2000 census. Avery is located on State Route 4 and is home to the oldest continually operating hotel in the county, the Avery Hotel Restaurant & Saloon. Built in 1853, it was known as the "Half Way House," being located between Murphys and Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.5 square miles (11.7 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 672 people, 276 households, and 195 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 149.1 people per square mile (57.5/km²). There were 339 housing units at an average density of 75.2/sq mi (29.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.01% White, 1.04% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.30% Pacific Islander, 1.79% from other races, and 3.27% from two or more races. 4.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 276 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,184, and the median income for a family was $42,159. Males had a median income of $27,292 versus $26,429 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,394. None of the families and 1.3% of the population were living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and none of those over 64.

In the state legislature Avery is located in the 1st Senate District, represented by Republican Dave Cox, and in the 25th Assembly District, represented by Republican Tom Berryhill. Federally, Avery is located in California's 3rd congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +7[2] and is represented by Republican Dan Lungren.
