Avenue M is a station on the BMT Brighton Line of the New York City Subway. Served by the Q train at all times, it is located in Midwood, Brooklyn, at Avenue M between East 15th and East 16th Streets. When it opened, the station was known as Elm Avenue.

This local station, situated on an elevated embankment, has two side platforms and four tracks; it closely resembles Avenue J station. Platform extensions are at the north end of the station, and the northbound platform is slightly narrower than the southbound one. Each side has two stairways from the platforms to the stationhouse, which is a brick building underneath the tracks facing onto the street. The soutbound side has an exit-only turnstile, and its south stairway is double-wide. It also has a closed stairway across the street from the active mezzanine.

Just west of the station, at Avenue M and East 14th Street, is the former location of American Vitagraph, a prolific movie studio that produced silent movies from the turn of the 20th century until 1925, when it was purchased by Warner Brothers. A smokestack bearing "Vitagraph Co." may still be seen from the station.

This station is frequently used by students of Edward R. Murrow High School, located just to the northeast.
