Talk:Automobile salesperson (United States)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The life of a salesman is rough and unstable. The managers treat them with little to no respect during the slow months. They threaten to fire them repeatedly, and harass the salesman's customers who visited by making phone calls to ask "Why didn't you buy from us?" During the good months, when money is pouring in from sales things can be great, but during the slow months the saleman is left feeling worthless by his mangement, and struggles to pay his bills at less than minumum wage salary.

One dealership in Fort Walton Florida, hires new people and fires others keeping a high turnover. Not caring that they are losing trained personal for untrained personal. Perhaps if they kept the trained ones even during the off sales season then they would show even more profit during the on sales seasons.

However, in many cases a dealership will hire a prospective employee which may have no sales experience and will give them a try usually based on an interview that was favorable, where the prospective salesperson may have showed personality and promise. This salesperson could work very hard the first few months and show excellent progress, but when business slows down, the salesperson is left with the task of following up his previous customers to ask for referrals and building alliances with outside sources that could provide leads. This is where the strong survive. It is the good salesperson that makes an extra effort to maintain his sales volume even at slow times. There are many salespeople that are knowledgable about their product line-up but do not possess the skills necessary to communicate those benefits to a prospective customer. These abilities are needed, especially with the competitive automobile market. The prices are high and a good salesperson can build the perceived value of an automobile up into the range of the dealers asking price. Unfortunately, sales talent is sometimes not evident until a dealership takes a chance on the employee. That could take a few months. This is usually when an employee settles in and the true characteristics and work ethic become evident.

[edit] Profession

this article needs serious clean up. regardless, where is the definition or explanation itself? as an occupation, it should be explained what a car salesman actually does for a living. most of this is conjecture, as each dealership is different. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by The undertow (talkcontribs) 12:35, 6 January 2007 (UTC).
