• 1852 - The University of Sydney was inaugurated, Australia's first university.
• 1930 - Collingwood Football Club won the premiership (football competition) for the fourth consecutive year.
• 1935 - John Latham is appointed as the fifth Chief Justice of Australia.
• 1997 - The Liberal/National coalition government of John Olsen is re-elected in South Australia for another term, albeit with a substantially reduced minority.
• 2004 - Keith Miller MBE, Test cricketer and World War II pilot died in Melbourne aged 84.
