Category talk:Australian alcoholic beverages

[edit] early comment about category
But why would it be a category? Do you imagine some poor soul thinking "I wish I could find Australian alcoholic beverages"? Could you not just redirect to "piss"?Dr Zen 12:35, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- because there is already an established category:alcoholic beverages, which it fits into as a sub category. clarkk 12:46, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- Yes, okay, but you could then go on to argue that category: Queensland alcoholic beverages would fit into the Aussie one, and that category: Queensland alcoholic beverages brewed by my dad would fit into that one. Do you see what I'm saying? A category is not a just because it could exist. It should be something someone would genuinely look up. Still, if you really think it should be, no worries. I'm just asking.Dr Zen 12:49, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- i'm aware of over-categorisation, i don't plan to do that, and it is something that people would look up. here's my reasoning:
- someone created a Bundaberg Rum article and put it into the top-level category:australia, where it should definitely not be.
- category:australian beer already existed, but it clearly shouldn't be in that category (rum not being beer)
- it didn't seem to fit into category:australian cuisine exactly
- so i added this new category, made category:australian beer a subcategory of this category, and made this category a subcategory of category:australian cuisine.
- so i think that in sum, there is an argument for this category (which should not be subdivided by state, that would be silly), there are other unique-to-australia non-beer beverages such as various kinds of wine: Shiraz in particular, and other spirits (can't think of them off the top of my head) which could fit in here too. clarkk 12:58, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Hmmm, okay. I don't agree but you care more about it than I do. By the way, Shiraz is not a "unique-to-Australia" wine variety. I'm not sure why you think it is. Yes, it's called "Syrah" in France (although it's the same grape) but it's called Shiraz anywhere else it's grown. It originates from the town in Iran, where the grapes were first grown.Dr Zen 13:07, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Actually, even the Bundy guy says it's the only well-known spirit made here! The only other I can think of is Beenleigh Rum and that's far from "well known".Dr Zen 13:09, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- maybe we don't need it after all, i would be fine with moving Bundaberg Rum to the category:australian cuisine. i was mainly concerned with getting bundaberg rum out of the top-level australia cat, and it didn't seem to fit into the cuisine category too well (the other things mainly being recipies and food items etc.) and i figured that it might be able to be expanded, but on reflection you make good points, so maybe not (at least not until we get a huge number of them, warranting a new cat). feel free to merge it back into the oz cuisine cat, and delete this cat.

- as far as shiraz goes, i knew that it was called shiraz elsewhere, but it seems that australia produces a lot of it under that name and we have a reputation for it. clarkk 13:29, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Okay. Your argument was pretty sound but Bundy's going to look pretty lonely in that category on its own! BTW, any idea how you change a redirect into a disambiguation page. I'm willing to write a stub on [[Castlemaine]] but someone's made the name point to a town in Victoria!Dr Zen 13:31, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- why not write it at Castlemaine Perkins, doesn't involve a redirect. i'll add a Castlemaine (disambiguation) to the top of Castlemaine, Victoria with a link to Castlemaine Perkins. clarkk 14:14, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- ps this is what they've done for US cities like Detroit, Michigan. clarkk 14:15, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
