Austrasian Letters

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrasian Letters is a collection of diplomatic and other correspondence generated at the court of the Frankish kings of Austrasia in the sixth century.

[edit] Importance

The letters give a great insight into the workings of Frankish diplomacy, such as it was, and the Austrasian court in particular. From them it can be learnt about the literacy of the kings' inner circle and the way diplomacy was conducted, together with snippets of information not supplied by other sources of the period.

Caution must be exercised, however, given that very little is known about how or why the collection was compiled, or regarding its importance at the time.
