The Australian Poultry Cooperative Research Centre (Poultry CRC) is a joint venture established and supported under the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program.

The Poultry CRC's mission is to enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of the Australian egg and chicken meat industries and supporting industries through the application of strategic programmes delivering cost-effective and socially responsible production of safe, quality poultry products for domestic consumption in Australia and emerging export markets.[1][2]

The Poultry CRC is directed by a governing board with an independent chairman and comprises representatives from the five core parties; three industry representatives; and the chief executive officer.

Established on July 1, 2003, the Australian Poultry CRC is an unincorporated joint venture between the University of New England, the University of Melbourne, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, the Australian Egg Corporation Limited and Bioproperties Proprietary Limited.

Headquartered at the University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales, the Poultry CRC has an extensive collaborative network comprising researchers, educators and support staff from twenty-two participating organisations.

The Poultry CRC has four main programs designed to deliver the following outcomes:

  • Sustainable production of chicken meat without reliance on antibiotics
  • Development and commercialisation of new poultry health products and improved diagnostic tools
  • A poultry industry with enhanced bird health and welfare standards
  • Improved education and skills of poultry industry staff

The research programs are geared towards the first three outcomes and focus on the following strategic areas:

The broad goal of the Poultry CRC's education and training program is to achieve an increased level of skills for all sectors of the Australian poultry industry.

Total resources accessible to the centre over the seven year grant period amount to AUD78.3 million, including AUD23.1 million funded by the CRC Programme.[3]
