Australian Photographic Portrait Prize

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Australian Photographic Portrait Prize, art prize held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in conjunction with the Archibald Prize, Wynne Prize and Sulman Prize. This prize is a much newer prize, beginning in 2003. The winner receives $20,000, and their work is acquired by the gallery to its permanent collection.

In its inaugural year in 2003, there were 560 entries received and 50 works exhibited. In 2005 entries rose to 657 and there were 49 works exhibited.

After four years of promoting the competition as the de facto national photographic portrait event the Art Gallery of New South Wales summarily discontinued the prize in November 2006.
