Australia's first appearance at the Winter Olympic Games was at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Australia sent one athlete, Kenneth Kennedy.
Turkey, Greece, Liechtenstein and Bulgaria also competed at the Winter Games for the first time in 1936.

Australian Frederick McEvoy captained the British bobsleigh team, and carried Britain's flag in the opening ceremony. The 4-man team won bronze, and the 2-man team came fourth.
