[edit] Music and Speech
The Aurelia Jazz Band won the 2007 Iowa State Jazz Championships in Class 1A. Directed by Jason Heeren, the Jazz Band made it tenth consecutive, and 17th overall, appearance in the State Jazz Championships in April 2007. In Feb. 2008, they locked up a spot in the 2008 Jazz Championships. They finished 2nd in 2008 at state. The Aurelia Jazz Choir, directed by Deb Peterson, was selected to go to the first annual State Jazz Choir Championships in March 2007, where they placed third in class 1A. They repeated that feat in 2008, once again finishing 8th.
Aurelia's Speech department has been very successful over the years. In 2007, every student involved advanced to the state level, but only about half advanced in 2008. There was also one group and one individual sent to all state. The Speech department also put on the play "Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" in Fall of 2007. They perform a play each fall, alternating between musical and comedy.
[edit] Athletics
Aurelia has also produced successful athletic teams. The football team produced a 7-3 record in 2007, before bowing out in the first round of the State Eight-man football Playoffs to 2005 State Champ Glidden-Ralston High School. It was Aurelia's fifth appearance in the State Playoffs in seven seasons, making them one of the most successful 8-Man schools in Iowa's first eight years of 8-Man football. Aurelia has gone 60-11 since their switch to 8-Man. Coach Myron Radke has compiled a total of 156 victories and 83 losses in 24 seasons as a head football coach at Aurelia.
The 2007 Aurelia boy's basketball team finished only 10-12 in the regular season, but advanced to sub-state in the Tournaments. They accomplished this by defeating both the eighth-ranked Odebolt-Arthur and the top-ranked, undefeated Alta basketball teams to win their district and advance to sub-state, where they lost to eventual 3rd place at state, Wall Lake View Auburn. The AGH Wrestling team went 27-3 in duels and advanced to the State Duel Tournament for the first time in school history. The boy's track team sent down two races, the 4X200 and another runner in the mile. He finished 3rd. The Girl's sent their high jumper, who finished 8th. The Wresling team is now consolidated with both Galva-Holstein High School and Schaller-Crestland High School, going by the name AGHSC.
[edit] Miscellaneous
- The current Aurelia High School building was built in 1973.
- A current issue at Aurelia Community Schools is declining enrollment. Although, Aurelia has very nice facilities and has no financial problems, Aurelia is on the verge of sending the school district to a nearby school because of the wide variety of curricula for which the teachers are responsible.
- After the Class of 2008 Leaves there will be less than 75 Students at the end of the 2007-2008 school year the football coach (Myron Radke), band director (Jason Heren), HS Principal (Dave Hickman), and the superintendent (Tom Vint) are leaving. As are the 2nd grade teacher (Sue Radke), HS math and tech teacher (Tim Limbert), and MS english teacher (Kim Vint).
