Aulonocara is a genus of cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi in east Africa. All Aulonocara species are all maternal mouth brooders. There are 23 described Aulonocara species, though numerous subspecies or races also exist. In the aquarium hobby, Aulonocara species are also known as Peacock cichlids.

They are best kept in an aquariums with other medium sized non-aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi. Decorate the aquarium with a lot of open space for the Aulonocaras to swim in and a lot of caves where fish can hide, rest or establish territories.

Only keep one male unless your aquarium is large enough to support several territories.
