LUAS Tram derails in collision with truck, Dublin - 25th August 2006
A LUAS tram derailed on the 25th August at an accident blackspot on the notorious red-line from Tallaght to Connolly in Dublin City Centre. The crash occurred at aproximately 3.10pm and involved a LUAS tram and a small truck at the corner of Queen Street and Benburb Street, the scene of many previous serious accidents involving trams and other road vehicles. In February 2005 a similar tram was also derailed by a semi-truck/40ft truck which was also alleged to have broken the red lights and collided side-on with the tram. A LUAS source said that numerous safety concerns had been raised since the last incident, and the junction itself "was not just one, but many accidents waiting to happen".
Three units of Dublin Fire Brigade responded along with two ambulances to today's accident but no-one was seriously injured. The tram driver was taken to hospital by ambulance crews as a precaution due to the severity of the crash. Reports from eyewitnesses allege that the truck driver broke a red light at speed and the LUAS tram which had the right of way collided with the truck, causing extensive damage to both tram and truck. Eyewitnesses also say that the tram driver could not in any way have braked in time to avoid the collision. It is believed that no passengers were injured in the crash, and the tram was later removed from the scene for repair, surprisingly the impact derailed the entire tram with considerable ease, which appears to been have been triggerred by a "concertina" effect caused by the sudden stopping of the front bogies-VS-the momentum of the rear carriages, which pushed the front carriages forward with such incredible force it caused their bogies to "lift up out" of the rails and similarly, this then happenned with the rear bogies. The accident is currently under investigation by the various safety authorities and the Gardai.

This looks like it may be a copyvio, but so far I don't see anything in googling for key phrases. However, since I wasn't able to find verification, that also makes this an unreferenced event. I plan to rewrite this data into the proper format for the article later this week. Slambo (Speak) 13:31, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
