August von Fligely

August von Fligely (26 September 1811 – 12 April 1879) was an Austrian Field Marshal Second Lieutenant, comparable to Lieutenant-General in the United States Army, and a geographer. A pioneer in arc measurement thory, he provided for the creation of quality maps in the third land survey of Austria-Hungary. The northernmost point in Europe, Cape Fligely, was named after August von Fligely. He was director of the military geographical institute in Vienna from 1854 to 1872.
