This eclipse is part of Saros cycle series 128.

It is also the third of five Metonic cycle eclipses, each being separated by 19 years:

  1. Penumbral: August 17, 1951. (Saros series 108, 71st of 72) [2]
  2. Partial eclipse: August 17, 1970. (Saros series 118, 49th of 74) [3]
  3. Total eclipse on August 17, 1989. (Saros series 128, 39th of 71) [4]
  4. Partial eclipse: August 16, 2008. (Saros series 138, 29th of 83) [5]
  5. Penumbral: August 17, 2027. (Saros series 148, 4th of 71) [6]

The moon's path through the earth's shadow near its ascending node progresses northward through each sequential eclipse. Only the third is total.
