Template talk:Audio-nohelp
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The usual template is {{Audio}}.
Template:Audio-nohelp links to an audio file for quick listening. It is meant to be used inline with text, for pronunciations and the like. To apply it in an article use the following:
{{Audio-nohelp|<name of sound file>|<text to use as link to soundfile>}}
For instance, {{Audio-nohelp|X morse code.ogg|X}}
is rendered something like this:
Since the template does not include a help link, an explanation needs to be provided elsewhere, like {{Inline audio}}. It is meant to be used in situations where the template is used many times in a row and individual help links are not necessary. See Morse code for an example:
[edit] Revealing license information
As with Template:IPAudio I question the design of this template, since it effectively obscures license information for anyone but Commons-savvy users. We would never accept this treatment of pictures or photographs. Why should this be any different?

- And what exactly is the problem with the license information? In the case of pictures one has to do some work as well in order to see it, we don't add {{GFDL}} license tags to every image caption, nor do we put links to the license there. The license is still available to those who seek it, so we're ok with the laws. //Halibutt 13:10, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- We do put links to the license information from every image. It's on the image description page, which you get to by clicking on the image. Not all pictures are GFDL. Same for audio.
- I've suggested that javascript be used to hide the info and help links until someone hovers over the sound file. You can try it yourself using the example on that talk page. This would provide both forms of information while not cluttering up the articles with "(info • help)" after every sound file. No one seems to have noticed my proposal, though. (Don't worry; it would be made to degrade gracefully for people who don't have javascript.) — Omegatron 13:32, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

- Yup, it's a decent solution (using pop-ups myself), but the problem here seems to be that the info is unavailable to un-registered users. I bet most of the registered users know how to strip an URL anyway, so reaching the media info page is easy for them anyway. This can't be said of unregistered users who don't have their own monobook installed - unless of course the script is integrated with the default monobook. Is that an option at all? //Halibutt 14:36, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

- No. The proposal is to use the pop-ups sitewide (after tweaking, troubleshooting and bug killing). Then we won't need this type of template at all and people won't complain about the clutter from the regular templates either. It will solve all the problems we currently have with audio file links. — Omegatron 15:15, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

- I doubt it's something that people are going to vote on. Just put a note in Template_talk:Audio#Formatting showing support. — Omegatron 19:21, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
