Audi S and RS models
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Audi "S" and "RS" models are a range of high performance orientated cars, of certain Audi model ranges, from the luxury prestige German automotive company, Audi AG. These cars are OEM factory "upgraded" versions of specific cars, from within Audi's standard range of vehicles, primarilly focusing in enhanced "sport" performance.
Numerous "S" models, from most of Audi's mainstream ranges have been produced over the years. These cars are recognisable by their "S" badges, and all Audi "S" models are equipped with their trademark quattro four-wheel drive system. Unique engines, along with larger, more powerful brakes set them apart from their related "siblings" within their model range.
Audi "S" models should not be confused with the lesser Audi S line, which are merely a trim/specification level, similar to say SE, which will share engines and brakes with the "lesser" trim specifications within their relevent model range.
Even higher performance versions, known by their "RS" (for RennSport (German)) badging also exist, and are some of the highest ultimate performance vehicles offered by Audi. Available for limited timescales, on a restricted model range, these "RS" models are a distinct step above their related "S" models, and are wholly designed, developed and produced in-house by Audi's high performance private subsidiary company, quattro GmbH.[1] All "RS" cars pioneer some of Audi's latest and most advanced technology and engineering prowess, therefore, "RS" cars could be described as halo vehicles.

[edit] Audi "S line"
Audi also produce an additional 'mainstream' specification of optional sports trim packages to specific models, known as the S line. These involve various minor suspension, engine, and appearance upgrades to most models in the Audi range. While not offering the same high performance levels as the S and RS models, they are notably cheaper. Again, the upgraded components used in these S line specification packages are designed, developed and produced by Audi's high performance subsidiary company, quattro GmbH, although the actual cars are still assembled in their relevent factories alongside the remainder of their 'siblings' in the appropriate range.
