Audi MLP

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Audi MLP (Modular Longitudinal Platform) is the English language name used by Audi AG, for its Modulare Längsmotor-Baukasten (MLB) automobile platform, sometimes also informally referred to as the B8 platform. The Audi MLP is one of a range of platforms from Audi parent Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen AG) (VWAG).

This technology forms the basis of the current B8 (Typ 8K) A4 and A5, as well as the Q5. It is also alleged to be utilised for the next-generation A6,[citation needed] the upcoming A7,[citation needed] and even the next A8.[citation needed]

MLP allows Audi to place the longitudinally-mounted engine and transmission further rearwards, (shifting the centre of mass of the major mechanical components (engine and transission) behind the front axle), and allows an increase in the wheelbase without lengthening the car's overall exterior dimensions. Less front overhang means MLP-based models will have a more even front:rear weight distribution.
