The Auckland Stars are a basketball team in the New Zealand National Basketball League ( NBL ). They play their home games at the Trusts Stadium in Waitakere , Auckland .
Auckland have won more NZ NBL championships than any other side . A key reason for their outstanding success in the mid to late nineties was the coaching of current "Tall Black" coach Tab Baldwin and the play of Pero Cameron and Kenny Stone . The Stars have won the last two NZ NBL championships ( 2004, 2005 ) thanks to outstanding players like American Casey Frank and current New Zealand internationals: Dillon Boucher , Aaron Olson , Lindsay Tait and Michael Homik .
For the start of the 2005 NZ NBL season the Stars moved into the 5,000 seat Trusts Stadium in Waitakere , Auckland ( the home of the New Zealand Breakers ). Before this they always played at the ETA O'Ryans Stadium at Auckland UNITEC.
In the 2005 NBL grand final the stars won a nailbiter , pipping the Hawkes Bay Hawks 69-68 in Napier.
The Stars won the minor preimership in the 2006 season, winning 16 of their 18 games. They lost reinging MVP Tait in the process, but after beating the Wellington Saints 85-79 in the semi-final, they will host the Hawkes Bay Hawks in the final. The final will take place at a neutral venue, as Auckland's main venues have been booked out.
