The Auckland Flower Show is a planned annual flower and garden show to be held in Alexandra Park in the suburb of Epsom, Auckland each November.
Previously the Ellerslie Flower Show was held at the same time in Auckland, and has been held every year since 1994 (except 1997).
The first Ellerslie show was held in the Auckland suburb of Ellerslie at the Ellerslie RaceCourse in 1994. The members of The Rotary Club of Auckland wanted to establish a unique fundraiser to raise money for local charities so they decided to host an event modeled on the famous Chelsea Flower Show in England. As of 2007 it has distributed a total of $700,000 for charity.
In 1998 it was moved to Manurewa, South Auckland, where it was held at the Auckland Botanical Gardens, and in 2004 Auckland Rotary sold the rights to the Ellerslie Show to a private company.
Each year, over 65,000 people have visited the show during the five days in which it is open to the public.
In November 2007 the organisers sold the name of the Ellerslie Flower Show and the use of their services to the Christchurch City Council, which intends holding future Ellerslie Flower Shows at Hagley Park in Christchurch.
On the 2nd December 2007 Auckland Flower Show Ltd announced that they will be continuing the tradition of the annual flower shows in Auckland with the Auckland Flower Show 2008, and on the 28th February confirmed that for 2008 the event will be held in Alexandra Park on the 20th till the 23rd November 2008
The Auckland Regional Council and Manukau City Council considered funding a flower show to replace the Ellerslie Flower Show and compete with the Auckland Flower Show, but decided in May 2008 to drop investigations.[1]
