Atletico Nacional was a Panamanian football team founded in 1995 and disbanded on 2001. It was based in Panama City and most of its squad was part of the national police.

[edit] History

Atletico Nacional had always been one of Panama's historic teams to play in ANAPROF, and even though they never won a championship they manage to become more than once a surprise team in the league. In 1996-97 the club played a modest season after just coming 1 point short of reaching the hexagonal round of ANAPROF, it finished 8th of 12 teams. In the next season there were changes in the league format, instead having a general table the 1997-98 season was divided in two groups, Atletico Nacional managed to improved its performance by finishing 3rd place in its group. Unfortunately they lost the quarter-final match against Plaza Amador in a 2-1 aggregate. Next season Atletico Nacional manage achieve the same success it accomplish last season, they finished 2nd of their group but were eliminated of the hexagonal round (yet another ANAPROF change in its format) when finishing 5th. The same results would occur next season, after finishing 6th in the general table and classifying to the hexagonal round, the team was eliminated when it finished dead last. The 2000-01 season was its last season were the team achieve the hexagonal round, after finishing 5th in the general, but the same results as last seasons repeated themselves and the team finished 6th. 2001 was the last season of Atletico Nacional, after the league been reformatted and divided into apertura and clausura, the team never manage to get into the hexagonal round. The apertura was its worst of its history, the team finished 9th of 10 teams, but in the clausura they manage to improve but came in one point short of achieving the hexagonal round. Atletico Nacional's last game in ANAPROF was agaisnt Alianza F.C. were they were defeated 2-1, Rolando Escobar scored the last goal for the team.

[edit] Disbandment

In 2001 Atletico Nacional were ejected from the league ('for ever') because of using a Colombian player with Panamanian papers. In 2005 a successor to the already disappeared team was created; CD Policia Nacional.
