Atlantis is a heavy metal band formed in 2003 by bass-player and songwriter Anders Thonander. In the middle of 2004 guitar player Olivier Laroche joined the group and in late 2005 the current line-up was completed when singer Stefan Kolev joined. The main music influences of Atlantis come from tradition/classic heavy metal of the British kind (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath) and the American kind (Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, King Diamond). However, most of the songs are very progressive in their song structure and odd time signature inspired by the likes of Dream Theater and Symphony X does occur. The band is also influenced by various power metal acts such as Blind Guardian and Helloween, and rely heavily on distinctive melodies most commonly performed on the lead guitar. There are also interludes on the album who are more or less entirely symphonic, this music is mostly inspired by filmscore such as pieces written by John Williams or Danny Elfman. The band is unique in one way as they have never actually met each other in real life, as the band was formed on the internet. Anders is from Sweden, Olivier from Canada and Stefan from Bulgaria (though currently residing in Belgium). Atlantis released a self-produced demo called Dawn Of Man in the end of 2005 and it received a lot of praise. The band is expected to release another self-produced record in October of 2007, this time it will be a full-length album named Atlantis.
