[edit] Conscription

The Atholl Highlanders were in existence during WW2, yet saw no action. Was membership of the regiment sufficient for people to avoid conscription into the 'regular army'? 161.73.37.81 19:38, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

No. The regiment has been a purely ceremonial one since its formation in 1839 (although its structure may have been used as a basis for the local Home Guard, but that is speculation on my part). Unless members of the regiment during the Second World War were in reserved occupations, or had a medical reason for not being on active service, then they would have been called up.
