[edit] Merge

This article should merge with/engulf "Sports Trainer". Anyone up for the task? Sfahey 10:11, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Adding merge suggestion

I've added the merge suggestion bar to the top of both pages. I might be able to help with the merge later. TheKain 18:23, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No Merge

As the creator of Sports Trainer i am stronly against a merge as there are several differences between the two articles. Yes they are similar but the position of sports trainer is very different to that of athletic trainer Including but not limited to; salary, working condirions, qualification required and also the role of the sports trainer in most australian rules sports is very different to that of an athletic trainer, in fact AFL football does not use athletic trainers. I know this because i am sports trainer for AFL football. thanks for the suggestion but it should not be allowed to happen. bradles_01

  • With no disrespect to the "sports trainer", athletic trainers are specialized professionals in the field of sport medicine. Unless the merge lobby can provide cited reference that indicates a parallel education, skill set, and scope of practice, the two should be listed independently. To merge them otherwise would be akin to merging psychologist and neurologist as both deal with issues regarding brain function. Clearly to do so would be a mistake, as would be merging the aforementioned fields. I invite bradles_01 to offer more detail to further support this argument as well, so that decisions are made based upon verifiable and referenced information. FYI, I repaired numerous vandalisms and poor citation of the athletic trainer page in January, and have spent considerable time addressing citation and editorial concerns to make the article appropriate for the public. Unnecessarily merging article removes some of the essential specificity that a truly global encyclopedia needs. Wikipedia is big enough for us all. Trwoods (talk) 08:37, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re-adding merge suggestion

There's been a lot of discussion here and on ""Sports Trainer" and the general view has been in favour of a merge. The only dissenting voice is that of the original author of Sports Trainer.

Reading the articles dispassionately two things stand out: 1. The similarities between them are greater than the differences. 2. Each is parochial - this article is US-centric and Sports Trainer is Australia-centric.

Clearly what's needed is a wider article which brings together common strands but also explains different local practices. So I've added merge suggestions to both articles.

  • Bradles01 was blocked for sockpuppetry and disruption once, and has done it again, so we are back to square one. If you want the deleted history of sports trainer to expand this article then you're welcome, but I suspect you could do a better job from other sources. Guy (Help!) 15:53, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Athletic training is a name-recognized field practiced in the United States and Canada (and emerging elsewhere in the world). If there is a different, more inclusive umbrella term that encompasses all of the athletic rehabilitation and performance management aspects, athletic training and sports training could fit under that umbrella. However, each page should be allowed to be maintained individually, insofar as each is written and cited in a fashion appropriate to Wikipedia. Trwoods (talk) 08:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
