Athletic commission

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An athletic commission is an organization which oversees combat sports within a U.S. state, Canadian province, or other regional subdivision. Sports under the purview of an athletic commission include boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts, and professional wrestling. The rules and guidelines for such events can vary by each state or province, and though each commission may have different rules, they can also enforce suspensions and medical clearance denials from other commissions.

The commissions set rules for the events, and monitors conduct by fighters, promoters, and medical personnel affiliated with an event, and also uses a referee under the employment of the commission to oversee the fight in a fair and neutral manner. It also collects any taxes owed from ticket sales.
