I am the first generation (of parents from El Salvador) to be born in the US. My mother arrived in California in 1970 with a permanent resident visa. In late 1970, my father came here with a visitors visa and I happened about 9 months later. In a nutshell, they fled the El Salvador Civil War. My mother was from the wealthier north while my father was from the impoverished south. That was a clash within itself since the war's premise was rich vs. poor.

I read, write and speak fluent English and Spanish. I completed two years of high school Spanish courses which taught me proper Spanish grammar.

I speak mostly California English but having lived in Portland and Seattle for 1/3 of my adult life, I probably speak a little Pacific Northwest English.

While I am able to speak with the Chicano English accent with ease, I don't speak this way.

My Spanish dialect and accent is a mixture. Given the fact that my parents are from El Salvador, I learned their Spanish. Given the fact that I was raise among a mostly immigrant Mexican population, I learned their Spanish also. Additionally, I have spent a good amount of time in Spain, thus have learned their Spanish.

People with whom I speak Spanish to (at a Mexican restaurant, for example), think my accent is Spanish due to the fact that I lisp the c and z as the Spaniards do. Oddly, I only lisp certain words and sometimes even lisp the Spanish s when I am unsure of the words spelling.
