Portion used |
Still image. |
Low resolution? |
Yes; size reduced from original DVD resolution and reduced quality. |
Purpose of use |
Illustrate Stargate (device) and / or Asuran technology in Stargate |
Replaceable? |
No; This is a single still frame from the Stargate Atlantis Season 3 DVD of reduced resolution. It should not impede the copyright holder(s) from selling the product as it is from film that has been previously released. |
This image is a screenshot from a copyrighted film, and the copyright for it is most likely owned by the studio which produced the film, and possibly also by any actors appearing in the screenshot. It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information. |
Re-uploaded TV resolution image, that complies with WP:NFCC guidelines. I will state why the image meets the criteria (I apologize for it junking up the file history summary section of the article so much):
1. No free equivalent. There is no free equivalent of this image; it is a still from the Stargate series' DVD and cannot be reproduced freely and display the same information. 2. Respect for commercial opportunities. This image cannot be used in a way to replace the original copyright media; it is a still capture from a full motion picture episode. That does not replace the full motion equivalent. 3. a. Minimal usage. This image is the only image to to illustrate the [| Asuran Satellite Weapon] in both Stargate (device) and Asuran technology in Stargate. Therefore it is used minimally to illustrate a specific device. No other images of this device are currently on Wikipedia. 3. b. Minimal extent of use. The entire work is not being used in this case; the image in question is a still frame capture from the DVD release of Stargate Atlantis Season 3. It is reduced to 56% of it's original pixel count and original resolution of 853x480. The image is also compressed with the JPEG format to under 50kb, and therefore does not contain the original quality of the aforementioned capture. The current resolution, 640x360, is generally considered TV-resolution (and blow). I also believe lesser resolution is not sufficient to illustrate the device in question. With a 250px size image, I believe it is difficult to make out the stargate residing in the center of the satellite. 4. Previous publication. This content has already been published outside of Wikipedia, in the form of a motion picture DVD set release. It should not hinder the copyright's holder to sell the product or posters in any way. 5. Content. I believe the image meets Wikipedia's general content requirements, and is encyclopedic because it is used to illustrate the otherwise hard to describe visual features of the [| Asuran Satellite Weapon]. 6. Media-specific policy. This image meets Wikipedia's media specific policy -- all proper copyright information has been given, proper image format has been used, size has been reduced considerably, reasons on why it meets NFCC has also been given. 7. One-article minimum. Both the articles Stargate (device) and [| Asuran Satellite Weapon] use this image. 8. Significance. This still is used to illustrate the Asuran Satellite Weapon (as already mentioned and linked to above) and I believe it adds significantly enough to it's accompanying articles that it belongs in the aforementioned articles. It illustrates other uses of the Stargate which otherwise may be hard to visualize or explain. 9. Restrictions on location. The image is used only in articles, and no where in disambiguation pages or anywhere else that would deem inappropriate. 10. Image description page. The image or media description page contains the following: 10. a. Both The source and copyright holder have been attributed in the image's main page under the non-free use rationale. 10. b. The non-free film screenshot template has been used. 10. c. The name of each article using this image has also been stated in the image's non-free use rationale; however the free use rationale for each individual article is very similar, perhaps each rationale should be edited to reflect it's use in each article. And that completes how the TV-resolution version of this image meets the WP:NFCC guidelines. That, combined with all the existing copyright information, I see no conceivable way it could possibly need reduced any further. |

That's 56% less total pixels that the original DVD capture; It's therefore adequately reduced to meet both fair-use criteria and show enough detail (the 25) | |
