Purpose of use

This issue's cover story was one of the Jack Williamson's most famous short stories and led to a novel series. The image is not decorative but shows the contrast between humanity's resignation and defeat and the unfeeling robots doing their duty as directed. The illustrator succeeded in capturing the essence of the story which the author feels was inspired by his own experiences as a child. Therefore, the illustration also depicts the interior landscape of the author himself. Further, this image takes on an added importance when one realizes that Astounding had been around for many years, yet With Folded Hands was the first story from Astounding to be adapted to radio.
