- Resigned from the astronaut corps after learning that he was suffering from pulmonary disease.

- Apollo 16
- Lunar Module Pilot, fifth manned lunar landing. Tenth man to walk on the moon.
- ALT, STS-2 and STS-51-I.
- Originally selected as Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 17, but was replaced by Harrison Schmitt when Apollo 18 was cancelled. Also flew the X-15 rocket plane.
- Apollo 17
- Command Module Pilot, last manned lunar landing
- Killed in automobile accident in 1967 after serving on the Apollo 7 support crew.
- Apollo 13, ALT
- Lunar Module Pilot, aborted lunar landing. Commanded the prototype space shuttle during testing. Was to command the original STS-2 flight to rescue Skylab in 1979.
- Apollo 15
- Lunar Module Pilot, fourth manned lunar landing. Eighth man to walk on the moon.
- STS-51-B
- Physicist. Most sources indicate he was a candidate for the cancelled Apollo 21. Selected in 1973 to fly on Skylab Rescue if necessary; the mission was never flown. First mission in 1985, having waited 19 years, longer than any other American astronaut.
- Skylab 3 and STS-3
- Apollo 16, STS-4, STS-51-C
- Command Module Pilot, fifth manned lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 16. Was the original Command Module Pilot for Apollo 13, but was grounded due to exposure to rubella, in which was not immune to. Also flew on the space shuttle twice as commander.
- STS-41-B, STS-35
- First untethered EVA. Also flew on Hubble Space Telescope deployment flight.
- Apollo 14
- Lunar Module Pilot, third manned lunar landing. Sixth man to walk on the moon.
- Skylab 4

- Command Module Pilot, third manned lunar landing.
- Apollo 13
- Command Module Pilot, aborted lunar landing. In tended as CMP on ASTP but was replaced by Vance Brand
