Asthmatic Kitty is an American independent record label founded in 1999 by a community of musicians from Holland, Michigan. Some were Holland natives, and others had come to attend local colleges and universities. While the original Holland nucleus has dispersed across the country, the fellowship is still growing, with new friends and shared projects with other independent labels. Asthmatic Kitty is now based in Lander, Wyoming, Indianapolis and New York City.
The label's name refers to Sara, a pregnant stray with feline asthma adopted by one of the label's founders in 1994. Sara, now fifteen years old, is also based in Lander, Wyoming, elevation 5358 ft., where the thin, dry air alleviates most of her asthma symptoms.
