When did the manufacture of 40 and 50 year asphalt shingles begin? I believe laminated (i.e., 30 year) shingles gained popularity in the early 1990s. What are the dimensions of a standard American asphalt shingle?

Are Asphalt Shingles used often outside of the US & Canada? How frequently are they used in India and Australia?
