The Panamanian Association of Translators and Interpreters (APTI) was founded in 1984 with the purpose of integrating cultural values and technical resources with the commitment of continued personal, intellectual and professional growth while maintaining an open approach to the demands of the translation and interpreting professions.
Vision: Become an institution that serves as a link and as a constant source of feedback to foster the collective growth and professional development of its members; and to serve as the governing entity for certification and continuing education at the national level.
Values: Knowledge; as an integrating process and the capacity to interpret both self and the world. Teamwork; as the most effective tool used to reach our goals and achieve a sense of accomplishment as a guild. Communication; understanding language as an instrument that allows for the transmission and ownership of culture.

The Panamanian Association of Translators and Interpreters (APTI) was conceived during the closing lunch of the First Seminar on Translation and Interpreting on June 25-30, 1984. An Organizing Committee for the Panamanian Association of Translators and Interpreters (APTI) was named, meeting on various occasions to draft the by-laws and organize educational activities. At a meeting on October 6, 1984, in the Jose Dolores Moscote Auditorium, at the University of Panama, the association's by-laws were approved and the first Board of Directors was elected. Zully de Martinez was the first President of the Board of Directors.
APTI was founded on June 30, 1984 under the auspices of Etilvia Arjona Chang, main sponsor and advisor, and acquired legal status through Resolution No. 126 on March 19, 1985.
